Operator: 대한민국 육군 (Republic of Korea Army)
Unit: Kia Motors K-711
Shot Location: Gyeongchung-daero 256beon-gil, Janghowon-eup, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea

Vehicle background: "It is the most deployed vehicle in the Republic of Korea Army in two variants. It is based off the designs of the M54 5 ton truck and the M809 5 ton truck, with a loading capacity of 5 tonnes and a 5 ton truck. It is mainly called "Odon" in field troops.

The official name of the vehicle is K-71X, which is different from K-71X, and is only available as a recovery vehicle (K712) and a dump type (K713). Therefore, there is one Odon as a rescue vehicle in the family of vehicles. In addition, there are models with hydraulic crane (K-711 K613AW) and tractor (K715). The dump truck is mainly utilized in engineer units, the rescue is in support units and tanks, and the tractor is mainly in engineers and support teams. In rare cases, there are five-ton shop van-type (K716) vehicles. Normally, the shop van is responsible for communication and maintenance support, but the main use of the 5 tonne shop van is the mobile command center, which can be seen mainly by units under general command. However, if it is used in an engineer, it is a vehicle for removing explosives (EOD). There is also a 5-ton communication vehicle based off the van variant. Three other variants of the K-711 produced is five-ton water purifier for engineers, and an "carrier" for five tons of chemicals. In many cases, water purifiers are used in conjunction with generator trailers , while the 5-ton Command Car (K10) outperforms the smaller (KM9) Other variants are used for hauling Pontoon Bridge segments, etc. The use of 5 tons in the military is endless. The vehicle is soon to be phased out due to its age.

At present, the new type of K-71xA1 is also spreading in the 5-ton truck. For the new features, see the 2½-ton truck document.

At first glance, it looks very much like the smaller 2.5ton K-511. Despite the resemblance. The two do not have a major difference, the details are different because the production plant where the two vehicles are produced are in two different locations.

The easiest part to distinguish the K-711 from the K-511 as described by Republic of Korea Army troops:

① A large muffler stands vertically beside the passenger seat and an air cleaner case is located on the right front fender.
② There are 5 spaces divided by the vertical molding on the side of the loading box. (Four pans for two)
③ Overall, the bigger the tires are, the smaller the wheel looks. (Actual tires are 5 tons bigger.) In addition, there are six wheel screws and 10 tires for 5 tons.
④ There are dents on the sides of the bonnet.
⑤ There is a model with two fuel tanks, one on each side. K-712, K-713, K-715, and Tractor.
⑥ When you sit in the driver's seat and see the side mirrors, the two wheels do not show the rear wheels, but the rear wheel is visible on the five-ton truck.
⑦ The engine sound is different. The 5 ton's engine sounds like "chu chu chu" and the engine sound which is "suzusususususu" when the air is pulled out. The older five-ton engine may be made by Daewoo Heavy Industries, but the engine sound is similar to the bonnet-type Daewoo 8-ton dump from the '80s. However, this is the time of early-era Asian vehicles, and the current K-711A1 uses an engine as that used in the New Power / Super Truck / Trago.

It is mainly used by artillery units / engineers. This is in order to tow 155mm towers including the KH-179 and M114, and it is also related to the loading of combat pre-emtive supplies. Rocket artillery units also utilizes this vehicle as an ammunition carrier to load huge rocket motors (propellants). Units that also use the K-55 self-propelled howitzer also uses this vehicle for ammunition transport. As a matter of fact, most of the other box truck variants are common in other ROK Army units, and even though they are rarely found in artillery units, most of them are car models such as a command car (aka 'boxcar') that is not a general cargo type. For reference, some K-711s are used by certain Army units to tow 105mm tandem howitzers. There are many K-713 5-ton dumps in engineer units and K-715 in tractor form. It is mainly used for transporting track-type construction equipment (excavator, dozer, etc.). There is also an RBS (Ribbon Bridge System) vehicle (K-719), which is used only in Bridge Erection units.

Another thing worth mentioning is. What is unique about the 155mm howitzer is that there is one pneumatic terminal in addition to the towing collar and electrical terminal. If you connect the 155-mm howitzer's brakes and a 5-ton truck through this terminal, braking the 155-mm howitzer also brakes the 5-ton truck. From 155mm, the weight of the gun is not a joke, the jolt of the truck when braking is to prevent the truck from damaging itself by pulling out the traction ring in accidents. These form of accidents are common in early model K-711s

One problem common in the K-711 variants is when sitting on the driver's seat. One is overwhelmed by the size of the vast bonnet, which can impede visibility. There are many cases where rods are welded on both ends of the front bumper, which is welded so that the vehicle width can be visually inspected.

The common problem with these military vehicles is that the brakes are a little stressed (especially for older vehicles), especially when they are loaded with cargo. When the training was conducted by the Bridge Erection Army Training Center, an engineer rapidly braked a K-711 truck in the Yeongdong Expressway, and the follow-up truck collided with it.

The transport capacity of the "Odon" is 9 tons, but it is not enough for these trucks to be used for public works, mainly because of the poor fuel consumption. The target weight for most vehicles of its size is 9.5 tons of commercial and 11.5 tons in Hyundai and Tata Daewoo commercial vehicles.

For reference, unlike the 4.5-ton and 5-ton trucks that come in for 1.4-ton, 2.5-ton or 2½-ton trucks to replace 1-ton trucks, 9.5-ton or 11.5-ton vehicles are hard to see in field units. In the infantry unit there is no authorization of the Otton truck car (K711), and in the artillery unit, the commercial vehicle can be seen in the support unit because the vehicle can not be dragged. In fact, there has already been a 9 ton (KB-940) or 11.5 ton heavy-duty truck in operation at the headquarters of each munitions support command.

The age of the vehicle is its largest problem in the ROK Army. 64% of 5-ton trucks have already exceeded their lifespan. Therefore, the sale of surplus models to the public commercial trucks is likely to increase.

Despite its age, the K-711 was chosen used as the platform of the locally-produced 105mm wheel type self-propelled gun named "EVO-105" The maximum speed is in the range of 82 to 83 on flat terrain. Going downhill, it is over 85, and in some cases can go up to 90kph.

The Spike NLOS Launcher will also use the K-711 as a prime mover. It will also be introduced as a LOGIR launch vehicle built on the K-711 platform. In the near future, improvement of the quality is proposed by integrating K511 series and K711 series, in a new improved design."
